New Photo Share App: Color

Last week in Mobile seemed to be all about the new photo sharing app “Color.” There’s a lot of hype around the app, so much so that you could almost forget that SXSW just wrapped up. At first glance, it seems like a pretty interesting idea: the app displays a photo stream from users nearby, creating an informal and dynamic social network. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to experience the app’s coolness factor for ourselves since there was no one for us to share with in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where iPhones are a near-universal accessory (and after looking at the reviews in the app store so far, it seems like we weren’t the only ones experiencing this problem).

We’ll try again in Manhattan and hopefully have better results, and in all fairness, we didn’t wait long after release to do our testing. At this point, though, we’re not sure how we feel about the $41 million dollar app.

Incidentally, we’re also working on a photo-sharing app with some similarities (the price tag, however, is definitely not one of them). Instead of displaying images from folks nearby, the app streams the “most popular photos” of your Facebook friends. The app’s algorithm is based on several factors including which photos have received the most “likes”, how many people are tagged in it, and how many comments it’s received.

Given how many photo-sharing and social networking apps came out last year, there’s sure to be fierce competition for users in 2011.
May the best app win!
